How do I make a Student Query or Selection in PowerSchool? (Beginner)

One of the fundamental functions that any PowerSchool User must learn is how to make a select individual as well as groups of students in PowerSchool to perform functions or run reports.  Everything starts with selecting a student and as any PowerSchool session starts with the home page, that is where we will start.

In this article, we will cover some basic Student Queries that can be achieve only by clicking on some of PowerSchool’s basic selections from the home screen.  They include:

  1. Select a student(s) by last name
  2. Select a student(s) by grade
  3. Select a student(s) by gender
  4. Select all students

So you have logged into PowerSchool.  Now what?  Well for starters, you should see a screen like this:

Making a student selection by last name

If you wish to select a student by looking up their last name, start typing their name. You should see a list of students with the same letter of the last name in a screen like below:

You can select the individual student by clicking the blue plus button or by hitting enter/return on your keyboard. You can either work with the group of students by using the pull down menu to “Select a function for this group of students” OR click on an individual student to be taken to the student page.

Frequently asked question:  Can I save my selection for later?

Answer:  Yes!  So long as you do not make a new selection, your current selection will remain intact.  If you ever want to know what your current selection is, return to the home screen at any time and you will see “Current Selection (#)” appear in the “Browse Students” section.
